The Attention™ System

There is a general consensus that the subjectivity of focus groups has inherent weaknesses when evaluating the strength of screen entertainment. There are dominant personalities that dictate the group, people don’t always tell the truth, and viewers do not always recognize why they like and dislike something (the difference between the conscious and sub-conscious).

The Attention™ System attempts to identify valid and reliable measures of what attracts various demographics to narrative entertainment.

Applying new developments in the areas of cognitive science, neuroscience and psychology, the system analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of audiovisual narratives in an ultimate attempt to predict their performance.

We envisage two main applications for the Attention™ System:

  • Evaluation of scripts, pilots and completed works by trained staff based on a series of "Attention Drivers", and through more powerful and indicative "focus" groups (Phase 1).
  • Live evaluation of content using psychophysiological test equipment and consumer panels (Phase 2).

Both applications help with the business of risk management - choosing the right ideas, developing them well, and budgeting against a realistic market expectation.

Our psychologist Kathryn Bristow is working with the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol. Bristol was chosen for the strength, depth and international quality of its research, as evidenced by a 5* rating. The university shares our interest in human behavior, cognition and emotion, and fully supports our aim.

The collaboration with the University of Bristol enables us to use the latest technology to measure behavioral and autonomic indicators of attention, for example:

  • Pupilometry
  • Eye Movement
  • Heart Rate
  • Respiration
  • Electrodermal activity
  • Blood pulse volume
  • EEG
  • Facial EMG
  • Interest level devices
