There are elements to a successful story that have
stayed the same since the time of Aristotle. Naturally, as society
evolves, these elements need to as well. Many dramatists and so-called
story gurus have tried to develop theories or rules for this. Our
approach is more scientific. Evolutionary psychologists have shown
that stories are part of the human survival code. In other words,
stories are part of the package that ensures our survival as a species.
This has allowed us to derive hypotheses that explain why some works
are more popular than others.

Historical epic or sweeping love story?Applying
the characteristics of Evolutionary Psychology and using extensive
statistical work, we have been able to develop a system that objectively
evaluates television programs or films. The Attention™ System
is broken down into factors derived from psychological research while
the TAPE system has more of a historical perspective. Together,
they can analyze both scripts and final cuts. And their factors
take account of different demographics, proving that the same show
can both succeed and fail depending on the target audience.
There is a robustness to this type of analysis that can often surpass
a mere focus group. Our studies have shown areas where members of
a focus group may be swayed by a more dominant personality; and
sometimes people’s verbal responses contradict their actions. An
objective evaluation system has the ability to document the possible
inaccuracies of the focus group and also back up the findings of
the group. Furthermore, this system can be used at the script stage
thereby saving money in the production and post-production arenas.
